Phytotherapy: a safe and effective solution for hormonal help

Published May, 2011
Update Sept, 2019-  at end

Many women using synthetic hormones stopped when the Nurse’s Initiative published the negative side effects. Now more women use natural treatments to help with hormonal challenges, ranging from acne to weight gain and hot flashes.

Phytotherapy is the use of plants, either from food or herbs, for healing purposes. Phytotherapy is a wonderful alternative for hormonal balance because it works with your body to give you what you need, and has a proven track record of safety and efficacy.

Both women and men have hormone receptor cells that can be filled (like a key fitting into a lock) in several ways: EDC’s: endocrine disruptors produced by industrial by-products; xenoestrogens: prevalent in plastics, household, personal care products, fertilizers, pesticides; our body’s own hormones, AND plant precursors to hormones, or phytohormones.

The healthiest choice when our own hormones are out of balance is to use phytohormones to fill our natural hormone receptor sites, so that the toxic forms have no sites available, and will be eliminated via liver, kidneys, lymph and bowel.

One example is Black Cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa)(US). This herb acts positively to reduce hot flashes, in addition to its long historical uses as an antidote for snake bites, fevers, phlegm, and a tonic for the central nervous system. Many women have had exceptional relief from hot flashes and night sweats with a standardized formulation of Black Cohosh combined with Dong Quai. This formula, known as FE (Flash Ease) can work within the week, without the negative side effects inherent in drugs.

Maca (Lepidium meyinii) is another herb that has hit the American market in the last 10 years. To learn more about these and other natural aids for overall female hormonal health, join us for fun and informative dinner classes in Duncan. The next class will deal with Hormones for both Women and Men. This $10 investment can make a difference in your life! We’ll discuss Men’s health,  Monday June 13th. Call 250-748-6802 to register.

Also be sure to understand the more about the phyto hormones from soy, in our article: The Soy Controversy  and Soy and Breast Cancer .

UPDATE September 16, 2019

There are other herbs that one may have unwarranted warnings due to the general misunderstanding about the different  human interactions  of phyto hormones, human hormones, pharmaceutical hormones and environmental, toxic hormones (xenohormones) such as xenoestrogens mentioned above.

Some more common herbs that carry warnings are: licorice, red raspberry, dong quai, ginsengs, wild yam, red clover, chaste-tree berry,  evening primrose, ginkgo and saw palmetto.

Brassinosteroids (BS) are natural low-molecular-mass bioregulators, i.e., plant hormones that are present in all vegetable matter and possess growth-modulating and adaptogenic activity. Many common foods including plum, pear, apple grape berries, beans, sprouts, cabbage, spinaches, soybeans, grains, hops, garlic, onion would also be contra-indicated if one followed this (il)logic.

The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine recently published a summary stating that they have found no credence to the suggestion that soy may be harmful to human health. See my article on Soy Controversy from 2010 that supports this finding.

You may also want to refer to Soy and Breast Cancer .

These plants all have their benefits, so do not be scared off by medical warnings that are based on biochemical mis-information.

Q & A: Female Period Regulation

Question:

My 12 year old daughter is needing to have her period regulate – you had suggested Women’s Formula quite a while ago, but she didn’t want to take pills. Now she is ready. How many should she do?

DF

Answer:

For a 12 yr. old, I would start with Female Comfort (US)  4/day for 1 month, (2×2) then if not getting desired results , increase to 2 x3, (or 3X2 if this is too difficult timing wise) until regulation starts. Once you have regulation – from 25 – 33 days for one or two months, then decrease to 4/day. After a few months, 2/day may be effective. Each woman is different.

Whenever there is extreme dysmenorrhea, i.e. pain, cramping, excess bleeding, I suggest starting with 6/day, then once one or 2 periods are better, once can decrease to 4/day.

Some women will take 2-3/day until 1 week before period, then increase to 6/day for  the last week to have a trouble free menses.  FYI: This also works very well for peri-menopause.

Periods should not be painful, exhausting, or  otherwise difficult when hormones are balanced. If her condition does not balance out within a few months, please get back to me, as there are several options and other solutions.

Of course, nutritional diet, good bowel movement, exercise, plenty of water, no sugar, stress reduction; all the things clearly explained in my Paw Paw Program book, are important, no matter what the condition.

Q&A Hot Flashes and Lady’s Mantle (Alchemilla)

Question:

Thanks again for sharing the lovely photo of you and your grandson!

On another note, I wonder what you might know about Alchemilla Vulgaris (Lady’s Mantle) to treat hot flashes – they’ve been coming and going. My friend gave me a small bottle with extract. I’ve done quite a bit of research – including on your site – where nothing came up, but I can’t seem to figure out whether it’s really worth trying it out… especially since I’ve been told by quite a few people that my liver is weak and needs more support (I’m starting ginger compresses for that) and I read that alchemilla may have deleterious effects on my liver. So confusing! Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks!  A

Answer:

You are welcome….Grandson Holt  is a charmer and a healthy herbal baby!
Re: your question:
Lady’s Mantle is a wonderful herb; I don’t believe it is bad for the liver, (would like to see that research!), but it is also not my first choice for hot flashes, which I do feel ARE related to liver health.

Alchemilla vulgaris  works more with kidney, fluid energy. I have used this herb for conditions like vaginal discharge, and menstrual flooding as it has drying, toning, strengthening properties. I have made boluses for vaginal insertion, as well as used tincture with good results. As well as for purulent wound healing.

Sorry I just have not had time to enter much of my collected articles on individual herbs – maybe a retirement project? In my experience, Matthew Wood, Rosemary Gladstar  or Susun Weed would be reliable sources for herbal info –  they probably all have good websites.

Ginger on the other hand, is definitely good for liver, and as a stimulant herb, can be good for cooling, and is anti-inflammatory. The other two herbs I rely on for hot flashes are Black Cohosh, Cimicifuga racemosa,  and Dong Quai,  Angelica sinensis. I use these in combination called Flash Ease.

Also there is an excellent Chinese formula which works on balancing hormones and supporting liver function. As I know you are in Bali and cannot access many of the formulas I use, here are links for these products in N.A. .  Liver Balance (US) and    BP-C (CA).

You may be able to find similar formulas using these herb in Bali. If you can find a local herbalist, she or he may know local herbs which will be well suited to where you are presently living.  If not, let me know if anyone coming to visit wants me to order for you to bring . Shipping to Bali might be reasonable, if capsules were taken out of the bottle and sent via any special way you might know.

Other simple techniques for hot flashes are drinking lots of lemon in water, very cooling; wetting your hair before you go to bed, using a cold cloth. or ice pack during night, uncovering your feet….. but liver and hormonal balance are the biggies for sure.

Traumatic Brain Injury and Progesterone

Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) affect more people each year than breast cancer, prostate cancer and HIV combined; 1.5 to 2 million Americans are affected annually. Football, hockey and car accidents all contribute to deaths from TBI’s.

Some preliminary clinical studies show support for the administration of progesterone to reduce cerebral edema and inflammation, resulting in up to 50% reduction in 30 day mortality . Best results have been shown if Progesterone is administered within 24 hours, either IV for 3 days, or IM for 5 days. treat these devastating injuries

Find out more about progesterone’s influence on brain inflammation and read about the recent human trials in article from Labrix Clinical Services.

Health products that protect the brain from normal inflammation of aging include herbs that have stood the tests of thousands of years, such as Gingko Biloba and Gotu Kola. In addition, oils such as Super Omega 3‘s help keep cell membranes flexible enough to absorb their nutritional needs and eliminate toxins.

General health principles, such as those outlined in Lorene Benoit’s book, The Paw Paw Program – The “Christopher Columbus” Approach to Cancer – The World IS Round and Cancer CAN Be Treated Naturally, also support brain health Extensive dietary recommendations and some recipes are given to help people understand how to eat better. Eliminating sugar is critical to optimum health and prevention of all chronic conditions, diseases, including healing from trauma and preventing conditions such as Alzheimer’s.

Hormones Make You Happy

One of my early teachers was Dr. Versendaal, a chiropractic doctor from whom I learned specialized muscle testing called Contact Reflex Analysis. He said, “Hormones are what make us happy”.

Hormones play such an important role in the health of all animals; in their miniscule amounts they have huge effects. They determine our sexual traits, yet both sexes need the same hormones to function; just in differing amounts. Hormones are secreted by endocrine glands in the human body. From the top down these are:  pituitary, hypothalamus, thyroid, parathyroid thymus, pancreas, adrenals ovaries/testes. Hormones are also secreted from fat cells and the colon.

Yes, the colon! Did you know that more serotonin is produced in  the colon than in the brain? Instead of anti-depressants, more people could be happier and healthier to ensure their colon is clean and working daily, rather than spending billions on damaging chemical anti-depressants.

To give you an idea of their complexity, the adrenal glands are responsible for secreting over 50 different hormones.  Besides their known function of dealing with stress, adrenal hormones also are responsible for fat storage and breakdown, insulin transport, pH balance, allergic response, fluid and mineral balance, temperature control, the list goes on.

Hormonal imbalance can manifest as teenage acne, conception problems, miscarriages, PMS, menopause and andropause discomfort, depression, hypo or hyper thyroidism, breast lumps and tenderness, hair loss and mood swings, to name a few.

We may ask why present day society is dealing with so many challenges with hormonal balance? Industrial by-products known as endocrine disruptor chemicals (EDC’s) have been on a steady increase in our society. These toxic mimickers have similar structures which can bind with our natural hormone receptors, wreaking havoc on our metabolism. Offenders occur in plastics, household and personal care products, fertilizers, pesticides, heavy metals. Our bodies contain up to 148 synthetic chemicals according to CDC analysis 2005. As the number of chemicals increases annually, this amount has likely doubled by 2014. The National Toxicology Program 2012 Report lists 64 Known Human Carcinogens (cause cancer), including Aflatoxin (found in improperly dried grains, corn, peanuts, some cow milk, rancid oils, cosmetics), Formaldehyde (most vaccines),   Tamoxifen and XRays (medical cancer treatments).  To avoid these one must make informed choices for every purchase or treatment you choose.

On the positive side, we can choose to include phytohormones, which are plant based hormonal replacements and precursors. They too can fill our natural hormone receptor sites, but with healthy, gentler forms that prevent the more toxic forms from binding.  These can be a boon to our health, as opposed to the detrimental effects of EDCs and xenohormones.

Just one example is Maca, Lepidium meyenii, also known as Peruvian Ginseng. As with all plants, it does not contain hormones, (only animals produce hormones), but acts positively on the hormonal system of both males and females. A four month study using males aged  22 – 44 stated that Maca increased semen volume and total sperm count remarkably. Maca stimulates the glands so they produce needed hormones. Maca has the ability to balance the hypothalamus and pituitary glands promoting healthy adrenal, ovary and testes function. Maca is widely used to balance symptoms of menstruation and menopause such as hot flashes, depression, vaginal dryness and irritability. It helps by regulating estrogen and androgen receptor sites. As far as safety, some Peruvian women take Maca from the age of three. These women are very powerful, even the elderly. Men use Maca as a safer alternative to Viagra, with the benefits and none of the dangers.

For hot flashes, a formula called Flash Ease combines the benefits of Black Cohosh and Dong Quai. As a concentrated timed release formula, it is very effective. If you are not getting control of you hot flashes after trying this at 2 per day for 1 bottle, get in touch – we can determine what WILL work for you!

All hormonal challenges can also be helped by following healthier lifestyle recommendations as suggested in Lorene Benoit’s Book:

Q&A: Menopause, Peri-menopause, FSH

Question:

Hello. I am a healthy female & will be 52 this June. my FSH level is 104 & have not had a period since Sept. Is this considered post-menopause? Thank you. MC

Answer:

FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone) is a hormone produced in the pituitary gland,  to prepare female ovarian cells for fertilization. In men, FSH stimulates sperm division.  Secretion of all our hormones is based on complex interactions, so  FSH levels are connected with progesterone,  estrogen (primarily estradiol) , LH (Lutenizing Hormone) , Inhibin B, and GnRH (Growth Regulating Hormone).

If you were younger and these levels were this high, it could be an indication of infertility or other challenges.  At age 52  it is normal  for FSH to increase, as we are coming to the end of child bearing years.

Ranges are:

  • Women who are menstruating: 4.7 – 21.5 mIU/ml
  • Postmenopausal: 25.8 – 134.8 mIU/ml

You are more likely still in the stage called peri-menopause, as it has only been 4 months since your last period. Post menopause  generally means  menstruation has ceased for more than one year.

During peri-menopause, hormone levels, menstruation, hot flashes and moods may vary considerably. The better health you are in overall, the less you will be affected.

My website blog has several articles on Hormonal Health, which could benefit you as you begin this news stage of life. General healthful lifestyle recommendations are also covered in detail in my book:

The Paw Paw Program – The “Christopher Columbus” Approach to Cancer – The World IS Round and Cancer CAN Be Treated Naturally.  Extensive dietary recommendations and some recipes  are given to help people understand how to eat better.  Eliminating sugar,  is critical to optimum health and prevention of all chronic conditions, diseases. These recommendations, with particular attention to keeping the liver and glandular system healthy will help ensure an easy menopause.

Many women are helped by a combination of herbs known as Women’s Formula. There are several formulas; some women prefer the Wild Yam and Chaste Tree combination, but there is ALWAYS something that works!

Soy and Breast Cancer

Myth: Soy is harmful for those who have or have had breast cancer because it contains estrogen.

In 2011, data from the Women’s Healthy Eating and Living study (WHEL) were used to examine the effect of soy intake on breast cancer prognosis in 3088 breast cancer patients who were followed for 7.3 years. As soy isoflavone intake increased the risk of breast cancer related death decreased. This is the third epidemiologic study to report: no adverse effects of soy on the prognosis of breast cancer: it does not counteract with the effects of tamoxifen and it may in fact provide potential benefits in decreasing risk of recurrence or death from cancer.

Soy contains Phyto hormones, which are not the same as human hormones. They are precursors which help to balance healthy estrogen, progesterone and testosterone in humans. To understand this better, please read Phytotherapy: A Safe and Effective Solution for Hormonal Health

Thanks to  Health Action Network Newsletter, a group which has worked tirelessly and successfully to help promote natural health awareness in Canada since 1981 – many years. A great non-profit to join! http://www.hans.org/

Please read  the soy controversy for more in-depth, which also discusses sources, quantity and more research. For your health, please use only non-GMO soy.  This is why it is included as one of the Super Foods in my book: The Paw Paw Program.

Q & A – Calcium for Osteoporosis and Alendronate (fosamex) – Part 2

Question:

Hi Lorene, my Doc is insisting I take fosomax  for osteo, do you have a good calcium product that is easy to absorb? and how much per month would it be? I might want to try the calcium way first. Will it constipate me? I am already taking cascara every day.
Cheers L.

Answer:

Great question and timing! I just published another post on Osteopenia, Osteoporosis and Bone Health Part 1, so here is Part 2 to answer your questions!

The types of calcium that we use in our practice are not constipating. In fact the one I just posted about, Nature’s Gold, is an excellent fibre source and increases bowel movements. The other ones we use the most are all in a herbal base, which 1) makes them more absorbable, therefore more effective even when the mg. numbers may be lower, and

2) the herbs add nutrients for overall benefit and

3) the herbs prevent constipation, while benefiting the obody overall with other healing properties.

The formulas I use the most are Cal Mag & D and Liquid Cal-Mag. For menopausal women having hot flashes, if Flash Ease does not work on its own, then we add Herbal Calcium.  My suggestion is to read the fact sheets giving you details of each one, (by clicking on the name of each supplement).

I have listed them in order of most common, so you may also just want to order the first one on the list. The cost for Cal Mag Plus D  is: Canada:  $29.50 for 200 tablets;  US: $19.90  for 150 tablets. Recommended dosage is listed on each fact sheet – there is no problem to double or triple this if you need extra calcium.

It is important with all supplements, but especially minerals,  to make sure they break down in normal stomach conditions. Nature’s Sunshine is one of the few companies that tests for this, and because of this we have had excellent results for lowering pH levels, eliminating muscle cramps as well as bone health.

Another post to read will explain to you the importance of Magnesium in any calcium formula. If a person is prone to any kind of cramping, they should take at least additional Magnesium Complex  capsule with each Calcium.

Fosamex is riddled with many side effects.  I encourage you to look into this further and share with your doctor, as well as sharing the positive results we have in increasing bone density in older women with the natural supplementation. Then make your decision.

Consider this statement from http://www.drugwatch.com/fosamax/side-effects/:

“For those taking Fosamax, perhaps the most frustrating side effect is the drug’s propensity to cause fractures of what is one of the strongest bones in the body – the femur. … stress fractures, often happen when patients least expect it. Some patients reported breaking bones while they were doing normal, everyday tasks such as walking or sitting. Merck said the fractures usually come after weeks or months of groin or hip pain. Researchers are still trying to determine why Fosamax is linked to bone breaks, especially in patients taking the drug for five years or longer. Many scientists theorize the drug shuts down the body’s bone-renewing process and creates more brittle bones.

And from  http://www.drugs.com/sfx/fosamax-side-effects.html:

“When Fosamax was introduced in 1995, it was promoted as the solution to osteoporosis and other bone-damaging diseases. Instead, studies show that Fosamax (alendronate) causes a slew of side effects that may be more problematic than osteoporosis itself. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) documented several of the drug’s side effects and subsequently distributed numerous warnings.

Fosamax belongs to the bisphosphonate drug family, which is known to cause many of the drug’s side effects. They range from mild to severe.

According to the drug’s manufacturer, Merck, the most common side effects include gastrointestinal issues, such as nausea, diarrhea, constipation and cramping. It can also cause skin rashes and eye problems.

Why would one risk this when we have safe, natural food nutrition, like Nature’s Gold and good quality Calcium supplements that increase bone density?

Of course, following lifestyle recommendation as in Lorene’s book:  The Paw Paw Program – A “Christopher Columbus” Approach to Cancer – The World IS Round and Cancer CAN Be Treated Naturally is recommended to improve ALL health conditions.

22 Reasons to Use Arginine for YOUR Health!

The nitric oxide derived from arginine is directly or indirectly implicated in practically every cellular response and health condition imaginable, from the cardiovascular system to the immune system, and hormone function to nerve function. Although an exhaustive list of possible applications for the amino acid is not included, the following are the primary scientifically-backed reasons that anyone – even healthy people – should consider adding arginine to their health and wellness regimen.

In 1998, a team of pharmacologists won the Nobel Prize for their discovery of how nitric oxide (NO) regulates blood flow in the body. One of the applications is that the release of NO causes dilation of the blood vessels. It was then discovered that an amino acid called L-arginine causes the human body to produce NO. As a result, L-arginine   (CA)  became a popular ingredient in dietary supplements for helping men achieve peak performance in the bedroom.

In addition to supporting male sexual function, L-arginine helps improve blood circulation for both sexes and helps support normal blood pressure levels. L-arginine is converted into NO that helps dilate your blood vessels. This, in turn, means your heart does not have to pump as hard, which promotes normal blood pressure and circulation.

The American Heart Journal presented 11 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials involving  L-arginine, all with positive results in lowering both systolic and diastolic blood pressure.

Please contact our office to place direct discount orders & receive professional support for your optimum health.

Below are some of the documented benefits provided by L-arginine Plus, a formulation which also contains other cardiovascular support. To see the benefits of each ingredient in Arginine Plus and other synergistic formulations, refer to Arginine for Cardio and Heart Health .

1. Arginine Plus is one thousand times more powerful than any naturally occurring antioxidant in the body. Arginine`s antioxidant properties support various body systems and may protect against heart disease, stroke, cancer, and diabetes, as well as slowing premature aging. 1, 2

2. Arginine Plus offers wide-ranging cardiovascular support, including controlling blood pressure 3, 4 and plaque formation. Nitric oxide keeps arteries relaxed and pliable for normal blood pressure, preventing hypertension and angina. 5

3. Arginine Plus enhances memory,6 particularly long-term memory, and may help to reverse the effects of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.7

4. Arginine Plus boosts human growth hormone (HGH) production, which has anti-aging properties. 8

5. Arginine Plus enhances communication of messenger cells between nerves and the brain. 9

6. Arginine Plus may help improve immune function10 and fight bacterial infections. 11

7. Arginine Plus may help in the treatment and prevention of diabetes since many disease complications, including poor circulation and blindness, are vascular in nature. Arginine is also found to regulate insulin secretion in the pancreas. 12,13

8. Arginine Plus may inhibit the division and proliferation of cancer cells. 14,15

9. Arginine Plus helps with cholesterol control by lowering serum and LDL cholesterol levels. 16

10. Arginine Plus enhances male sexual performance by treating vascular erectile dysfunction (ED). 17

11. Arginine Plus anticoagulant abilities reduce clotting to lower heart attack and stroke risk. 18

12. Arginine Plus reduces pregnancy-related hypertension, a risk factor for both the expecting mother and the unborn child. 19

13. Arginine Plus is useful in the treatment of asthma by opening pulmonary pathways for easier breathing and the treatment of lung disorders. 20, 21

14. Arginine Plus relaxes hypertonic sphincter muscles, preventing and healing hemorrhoids.22

15. Arginine Plus boosts lean muscle mass and preserves bone density by encouraging HGH production,23 which also leads to a reduction in fatty tissue. Because of these properties, it may be useful in weight management and strength training.

16. Arginine Plus can help offset cardiovascular and lung damage caused by tobacco use,24 since nitric oxide levels in smokers are less than half of those found in nonsmokers.25

17. Arginine Plus helps to accelerate wound healing26 and postsurgery recovery.27 Research has shown it is useful in treating burn wounds28 and stimulates wound healing in the elderly.29

18. Arginine Plus may be useful in enhancing athletic performance due to its ability to boost exercise tolerance,30 its beneficial effect on the lungs, and its effect on HGH levels, which helps with building lean muscle tissue.

19. Arginine Plus may be used to improve the function of the prostate.31

20. Arginine Plus may prevent and possibly reverse the effects of osteoporosis by positively affecting bone mass.32

21. Arginine Plus has been used in the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome33 and to reduce the occurrence of ulcers – especially stress- related – without affecting gastric acid production.34, 35

22. Arginine Plus may improve renal function and slow the progression of renal disease and age-related chronic renal failure.36,37 Arginine`s protective effect on the kidneys may also benefit those with diabetes.

Q & A: Excess Uterine Bleeding

QUESTION:

A  lady I am going to see  has dysfunctional uterine bleeding. I am going to suggest women’s formula and give her some education about this before she goes and has a hysterectomy. Do you have any extra advice? I feel like this type of topic will be very reoccurring.  MF from NS

ANSWER:
You’re right – hysterectomy is a huge topic. Dr. Christine Northrup states that 1 in 3 North American women have hysterectomies by age 60! That is an appalling number, with up to half  of these removals being unnecessary; one of the crimes of our North American society. In some cases it may be necessary, but this is not a decision to be taken lightly, as the after effects of this surgery for many women can be worse than the problems that led to the surgery. In my clinical practice, I have saved a few uteruses from unnecessary removal.

For dysfunctional uterine bleeding, do you mean menorrhagia, or excess bleeding? If so, then yes Woman’s Formula is a good start. I would also add LIV-C as in Traditional  Chinese Medicine, Liver – as part of the Wood element, controls the flow of blood. As this is excessive flow, LIV-C is the excess/yang formula to bring balance and harmony. In fact, the name of the formula in Chinese is TIAO He, translating as “Balance and Harmony”.

It is also important to determine what is the cause of the bleeding – have fibroids been diagnosed? I am glad you mentioned about educating her first. The emotional pillar is a very important  when considering reproductive and menopausal issues. For example, fibroids indicate stagnation or blockage (again Chinese), and one needs to look where there may be stagnation in life.

All of the four pillars of health need to be considered, as suggested in my book: The Paw Paw Program – A “Christopher Columbus” Approach to Cancer – The World IS Round and Cancer CAN Be Treated Naturally.  I am not in any way suggesting cancer –  all recommendations for treatingcancerare the same as those for optimum health, and I cover these extensively in the book.

If she is peri-menopausal, she probably is estrogen dominant, and may need more progesterone to balance, then you may consider Wild Yam/Chaste formula. But I would start with Woman’s Formula and LIV-C, then evaluate after 2-4 weeks. With herbs one will often see improvement within the week when you choose the correct formulations. And if no immediate improvement is noticed, you will still be adding nutrition that the body needs.
