Cancer and Sugar Connection

One common factor that links obesity, candida,  diabetes and cancer is insulin resistance. Science is beginning to realize that  insulin resistance is involved in all inflammatory conditions, such as arthritis (inflammation of joints), Alzheimers (inflammation of brain cells), atherosclerosis (inflammation and hardening of the arteries).

Overuse of sugar is linked to all inflammation. This article will explain some of the research behind sugar consumption specifically relating to cancer.

According to Lewis Cantley, director of the Cancer Center at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center at Harvard Medical School, as much as 80 percent of all cancers are “driven by either mutations or environmental factors that work to enhance or mimic the effect of insulin on the incipient tumor cells,” Gary Taubes reports, adding:

“As it was explained to me by Craig Thompson, who has done much of this research and is now president of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, the cells of many human cancers come to depend on insulin to provide the fuel (blood sugar) and materials they need to grow and multiply. Insulin and insulin-like growth factor (and related growth factors) also provide the signal, in effect, to do it.

The more insulin, the better they do.

Some cancers develop mutations that serve the purpose of increasing the influence of insulin on the cell; others take advantage of the elevated insulin levels that are common to metabolic syndrome, obesity and type 2 diabetes.  Some do both.

Thompson believes that many pre-cancerous cells would never acquire the mutations that turn them into malignant tumors if they weren’t being driven by insulin to take up more and more blood sugar and metabolize it.”

Some cancer centers, such as the Cancer Centers of America, have fully embraced this knowledge and place their patients on strict low-sugar, low-grain diets. But conventional medicine in general has been woefully lax when it comes to highlighting the health dangers of this additive.

It’s quite clear that if you want to avoid cancer, or are currently undergoing cancer treatment, you absolutely MUST avoid all forms of sugar!

Dr. Lustig’s work and his You Tube lecture alone have OVER one million views., even though it’s 90 minutes long. His research proves sugar is a “toxin”. His stance has nothing to do with calories in various sweeteners,: “It’s a poison by itself,” he says.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBnniua6-oM&feature=player_embedded

“If Lustig is right, then our excessive consumption of sugar is the primary reason that the numbers of obese and diabetic Americans have skyrocketed in the past 30 years,” the NYT says. “But his argument implies more than that. If Lustig is right, it would mean that sugar is also the likely dietary cause of several other chronic ailments widely considered to be diseases of Western lifestyles — heart disease, hypertension and many common cancers among them.”

In Lorene Benoit’s book: The Paw Paw Program – A “Christopher Columbus” Approach to Cancer – The World IS Round and Cancer CAN Be Treated Naturally, the direct link to sugar and cancer is clearly expressed. One example is on page 83, where she presents a chart showing the sugar connection with cancer. She also makes dietary suggestions that are easy to follow,  and includes a chapter with some simple recipes to help people transition out of sugar and into a healthier, satisfying way of eating.

For optimum health, not just for cancer, but those conditions listed in the opening paragraph, follow healthy lifestyle recommendations as suggested in Benoit’s book. You can order on the above link, by calling the office at 250-748-6802, or by emailing directly to TakeTheNaturalPath@gmail.com.

BI POLAR Natural Aids

QUESTION
We have a friend recently diagnosed with Bi-Polar and he wants
to heal it the natural way… I am researching it for him as I’d like
to see him go that way instead of with what the doctor wants him to take.
Any info you could share would be most appreciated, thank you! DL

ANSWER
Many respected medical doctors have used proper nutrition to treat emotional and psychological conditions, as well as physical. From Dr. Linus Pauling, nobel prize winner, to Dr. Abram Hoffer (co-authors of the extensive book OrthoMolecular Medicine) are just two of many. OrthoMolecular Medicine  means using vitamins and minerals in therapeutic dosages. Dr. Abram Hoffer was medical advisor of a Mental Institution in Saskatchewan and had far better results treating schizophrenic patients with nutrition than drugs. He also had promising results with cancer patients using a nutritional protocol. Besides being an acclaimed author and running a busy medical, practice Dr. Hoffer lectured internationally for many years, to Medical practitioners and students, so it is surprising to hear some doctors say, “ nutrition is not proven or researched”.

Researchers do not definitively understand some conditions, such as Bipolar. Theories range considerably, with no proven hypotheses. A shortage of lithium in the brain is one, just as a shortage of serotonin has been hypothesized to cause depression. More recent research throws considerable doubt on both of these theories.  A study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry  from U. Michigan, 2000, reports “in those with bipolar disorder, two major areas of the brain contain 30 percent more cells that send signals to other brain cells.” This report theorizes that “the extra signal-sending cells may lead to a kind of over-stimulation, which makes sense considering the symptoms of bipolar disorder”. Researchers are quite certain that the neurotransmitter system is at least part of the cause of bipolar disorder, but further research is still needed to define its exact role.

Most scientists concur that  psychological disorders are usually caused by multiple interacting  factors,  including biological, (heredity or genetic tendency) and psychological.  One of the best researched current explanations is  the “Diathesis-Stress Model.” The word diathesis means, in simplified terms, a bodily condition that make a person more than usually susceptible to certain diseases. Thus the Diathesis-Stress Model says that “each person inherits certain physical predispositions that leave him or her vulnerable to problems that may or may not appear, depending on what kinds of situations that person confronts” (Bernstein et al., 2000). Durand and Barlow define this model as a “hypothesis that both an inherited tendency and specific stressful conditions are required to produce a disorder” (2000).
A manic or depressive incidence is usually triggered by a stressful life event or issues in the person’s environment. This may include the loss of something or someone, a loved one, job, home; to any change such as the birth of a child, a new job or home, a move, or threatening life situations. Remember that what is a physical, mental, emotional or spiritual stressor to one person may not be to another.  Once the disorder is triggered and progresses, “it seems to develop a life of its own. Once the cycle begins, a psychological or pathophysiological process takes over and ensures that the disorder will continue” (Durand & Barlow, 2000).

We know that stress can be approached naturally via the Four Pillars of Health as described in Lorene Benoit’s book: The Paw Paw Program. To briefly outline,  the four pillars are listed below, with some specifics relating to BiPolar:
  • DIET: superior nutrition through improved diet, much like that recommended in the book. A diet that is beneficial for treatment and prevention of cancer is the same diet that helps improve everyone’s overall health.
  • EMOTIONAL HEALTH: especially stress reduction techniques, including meditation, yoga, relaxation, energy clearing,  counselling
  • EXERCISE:  to stimulate our “feel good” neurotransmitters, chemicals and hormones
  • HERBS and SUPPLEMENTS: some that we have had positive experience with for bipolar are:

Daily Maintenance suggestions:
Stress Pak – includes B vitamins, relaxing nervine herbs, or Stress Formula
Chinese Mineral Chi Tonic – to help regulate Chi or energy flow, plus providing trace mineral nutrition
Super Omega 3‘s to support the nervous system – at

In times of Manic or Depressive phases, add:
STR-C – (STRess Chinese)  a Chinese constitutional formula that calms an agitated mind – this one specifically to help calm a manic phase
AD-C – (AntiDepressant Chinese) A Chinese constitutional formula that clears stagnant Chi to help relieve depression

Therapeutic essential oils of  Ylang ylang, Rose Geranium, and Lemon have also been used as an effective aids.

As people with this condition can be helped with natural supplementation,  this is preferable to drug treatment, as all drugs have toxic side effects.  Besides the drug negative effects, many do not address the underlying causes, exacerbate the condition and may cause complications due to their addictive nature. In a crisis, if drugs are required, work at bringing the body back into balance for long term health.

Questions and answers: Menopause and Calcium versus Magnesium intake

We have added a category to our blog for general questions and answers.

Anytime there is something we can help with, please add your question to this category.

We have started with these two questions that came in via email.

Menopause

Question/from CW:

My co-worker at work is experiencing what I think is peri-menopause but quite extreme.  Her heart is pounding (out of her chest as she puts it), insides burning up and very weak…lasts a long time, like at least 20 min the last one….
She is going to make an appt with her doctor but I’m thinking if it is hormonal that Maca may be a good one to balance her hormones.  What do you think?  Any other suggestions as you know more about NSP products for that than I do.  She is on blood pressure meds and on NSP Blood Pressurex and does smoke.  She isn’t overweight and has been exercising this last year.

Answer:

Hi CW,

Yes your suggestion of Maca is good as a hormonal balancer, but I would also think from the description you are giving that this is how hot flashes affect her, so I would recommend FE in addition. As it is time release, she only needs 1 am and 1 pm until she notices improvement, then can may decrease to 1 per day.

Personally I played with these dosages over a period of several years – more when needed, less when not and it worked wonders. Please get back to us if to let us know how she is doing, once on the program. Of course all other lifestyle improvements, such as covered in my book The Paw Paw Program need to be followed.

Heart attack and Stroke

Question re: Cal-Mag intake

I read,  “new findings now suggest that calcium supplementation (greater than 1000mg/day) may modestly increase the risk of heart attack and stroke. Although more research needs to be done in this area, it is recommended that individuals meet their calcium requirements from dietary sources…first and foremost, seeking individualized recommendations from your doctor is recommended…”

Answer:

Yes I agree with part of this – too much Calcium is not a good thing. I always try to balance it with at least same milligrams  of Magnesium, or more if any constipation. NSP”s Calcium (in liquid form) includes 200mg Magnesium. There are  also pill combinations of Calcium and Magnesium in Cal – Mag Plus D and Calcium & Magnesium SynerPro . More research shows that Mag. is also essential for bone strength, and Calcium. has been overrated. And yes, we can get lots from food, if our digestion is working. As far as getting individualized recommendation from a doctor? As most medical doctors study nutrition less than 10 hours in 10 years, I think you would do better with continuing your own research or contacting an expert who works with natural health and supplementation, such as you have just done.

LOVE YOUR LIVER !

Gotta love your liver!

It is largest organ in your body, performing over 500 different and essential functions, without even being reminded. A few amazing facts about your liver. It  weighs about three to four pounds , has an amazing ability to regrow even if only 20% is left, and performs more than 500 functions to keep your life flowing smoothly!

Among its many functions, the liver:
  • Filters harmful waste products and toxins from the blood and distributes them for elimination via the bowels, kidneys, skin, lungs and lymph
  • Regulates and secretes substances important in maintaining your body’s function and health – glucose is a good example
  • Liver metes out glucose, or stores it for later use, thus controls our energy levels
  • Produces cholesterol and special proteins to help carry fats through the body
  • Produces bile to help break down and digest fats
  • Is critical in digestion of fats, proteins and carbohydrates
  • Produces enzymes and amino acids – such as glutathion
  • Metabolizes and helps balance of hormones
  • Assimilates and stores fat-soluble vitamins, such as Vit. A , D and E
  • Processes hemoglobin , thus is involved in anemic challenges

Your liver is really one intelligent, giant filter, screening all of the nutrients, drugs, medicines, chemicals, hormones and preservatives we intake daily. We need to take care of this hard-working organ. Stress, diet, environmental toxins, alcohol and overeating can wreak havoc on your liver. Some symptoms of a tired, overworked and congested liver may be:

  • Low Energy right up to Exhaustion
  • Allergies  and Chemical Sensitivities
  • Anemia
  • Anger or Depression
  • Bloating, Belching, Burping ( the 3 B’s)
  • Constipation and Diarrhea
  • Eczema, Acne, Hives, Rashes and Itchy Skin
  • Headaches, especially migraines
  • Hormonal Imbalances
  • Inability to Tolerate Cold or Heat
  • Nausea
  • Menstrual challenges including PMS, painful menses, and menopausal challenges
  • Muscle Pain
  • Weight Gain or Weight Loss

To help the liver, and other eliminative organs such as lymph, colon and kidneys function optimally, we need to nourish the liver with  super nutrition every day, plus help it with seasonal detoxification. A few suggestions for detoxification follow:

Weight Loss 4 Pillars /Insulin Resistance

 Four Pillars of Weight Loss

I am often asked, “What do you recommend for weight loss?” I find that I am not able to answer this question with a simple answer, because there are many variables. Weight gain can be due to glandular imbalance, improper or too much eating, lack of activity, emotional outlook, poorly functioning digestion or eliminative systems, Candida, or any combination of these.

I do not like to look at just taking supplements or herbs for weight loss. To achieve healthy weight management, you have to take a wholistic approach which entails several lifestyle conditions. I find it helpful to refer to these as the                     “ Four Pillars of Weight Management.”

1. Diet:

  • better diet: eat only natural, unprocessed carbohydrates and fibres such as vegetables, fruit, sprouted and soaked nuts and seeds. The most important is to increase vegetables, which provide phytonutrients, fibre, protein, carbohydrates as well as plant sterols, ALL essential for health. Eliminate processed, packaged, junk foods containing  fat, sugar, chemicals and paste (think pasta and other items with flour, especially white).
  • one exception to the above dietary recommendations is if one has an insulin resistant state of metabolism. This means the body cannot handle carbohydrates and is storing most of them as fat – usually resulting in weight gain especially around the middle. To correct the way the body handles blood sugar, carbs must be reduced drastically, and the body supplemented to be able to reverse this trend and process them better, with minerals like Chromium and formulas like GlucoReg.
  • drink more water, with Chlorophyll, fresh lemon or parsley.
  • ensure adequate intake of Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs), such as cold pressed Flax Seed oil, Evening Primrose, and quality tested fish oils. We get excellent results with Super Oil,  which combines these and fish oil; also add Olive and Coconut Oils to diet.
  • drinking 1-2 Tbs. of pure, unpasteurized apple cider vinegar with 1/2 tsp. unpasteurized honey  in a cup of warm water before meals can  help speed up metabolism and improve digestion, as it increases your body’s natural production of hydrochloric acid .

2. Lifestyle:

  • more exercise: a minimum of  four – 30 minute walks per week at a good pace that is enough to get you breathing  heavily. As you continue this, you will find that you are able to walk further/faster each week. Don’t worry if the first walk only takes you 50 meters. It’s a start! “No time” is not an excuse: just don’t watch TV or read newspaper for those times. Make time if health is a priority, which it is #1 priority for most people, if they think about it. Weight bearing exercise increases muscle mass, which may weigh more, but looks better and is healthier than fat.
  • ensure that you have two or more bowel movements per day. If not, take LBS II (a Lower Bowel herbal combination). These are both natural herbal laxative and bowel toners which are not addictive; the longer you use them the less you will need. You may also require the addition of fibre in the form of Psyllium Hulls Combination. They are very inexpensive insurance for better lifelong health and this is one of the most important lifestyle habits to develop. If your bowels are not working well, this is an essential part of any weight loss program.  A Cleanse is a good start to any weight loss program, and essential if someone does not have 1-2 movements per day. .

3. Emotional:

  • create a positive mental attitude about yourself, your body image and your life. Use pictures, affirmations, visualizations, meditation, journaling – there are many good tools. Having a buddy for encouragement is helpful. Set achievable goals and treat yourselves when you achieve them.  (non-food treats).

 4. Supplements:

Chromium is a trace mineral that is part of the Glucose Tolerance Factor (GTF), which   is necessary to balance glucose levels in the blood. It helps burn fat, regulate blood sugar, increase energy, and nourish the pancreas. Chelated Chromium Nicotinate is more bioavailable, as it is bound with niacin so the body’s cells and enzymes recognize this as part of the natural GTF molecule. It is enhanced by the addition of yarrow and red clover which also are natural sources of Chromium.

Synerprotein Powder is a nutritionally balanced non GMO soy based protein powder with amino acids and cruciferous vegetable base. This can be used as meal replacement (one – two times/day) and is a delicious  protein energy drink which can be mixed with water, juice,  and fruit. Either Synerprotein powder, or Nutri Burn  Protein poweder are best taken as a super shake.

Nutri- Burn is a whey based protein powder with added CLA – Conjugated Linoleic Acid, which boosts metabolism.

Digestive Enzymes  or Garden Essence plant enzymes – most people find that if they are digesting their food better, they require less food and have higher energy levels. Each of these enzymes are full spectrum, meaning they can digest all 3 major food groups. Eliminates 3 Bs:  belch, bloat & burp.

Collatrim contains protein in the form of collagen and amino acids, which our body needs for healthy muscles, skin, hair and nails. When taken on an empty stomach before bed, many people have found decrease in size, as fat converts into muscle. Other positive side effects are noticed in improved hair luster and skin tone, decrease in stretch marks,  stronger nails, and better sleep. “Lose while you Snooze”.

Fat Grabbers helps increase intake of water-soluble dietary fibre. Helps adsorb and eliminate cholesterol and dietary fat. Taken before meals also helps one to eat less.

Cleanses: 10 day Tiao He (balance & Harmony),  7 day Clean Start, or 14 day Candida Clear are all a great start to a weight loss program, as well as a good way to start healthier eating and lessen addictions.

“Healthy” Wheat and other grains?

Cardiologist William Davis, MD, says challenges started when big agriculture stepped in decades ago to develop a higher-yielding crop. Today’s “wheat,” he says, isn’t even wheat, thanks to some of the most intense crossbreeding efforts ever seen. The wheat products today are nothing like the wheat products of our grandmother’s age.

The intensive breeding efforts that have so dramatically transformed wheat should not to be confused with genetic engineering of food, or GMOs, which has its own set of additional problems.

Modern wheat’s new biochemical code causes hormone disruption that is linked to diabetes and obesity. “It is not my contention that it is in everyone’s best interest to cut back on wheat; it is my belief that complete elimination is in everyone’s best health interests,” says Dr. Davis.

In addition to this there is more research daily showing how wheat and other gluten containing grains are wreaking havoc on peoples’ intestinal tract. Leaky gut is an increasingly chronic condition caused by continual aggravation and inflammation of the digestive tract. Wheat (Triticum aestivum), has a high content of gliadins and lectins causing  wheat germ agglutinin (WGA). WGA plays a prominent role in lectin-induced adverse effects, causing immune disruption, cytotoxicty, neurotoxicty and cardiotoxicty.

The Paleo diet, Caveman diet, Atkin’s diet, are all versions of the same thing: what we have taught the last 30 years: CCC – Cut The Crappy Carbohydrates. .In other words, decrease the carbohydrates, especially processed ones!

As in my book, The Paw Paw Program, I recommend people opt for non-wheat, and more alkalinizing grains like quinoa, buckwheat, millet, and wild rice,  in small quantities (less than half a cup) to avoid triggering high blood sugar, abnormal cell growth and weight loss. If you are insulin resistant with belly bulge, you may even need to curtail these until you have regulated your insulin metabolism.

Weight Loss Success

Here is one success from a woman who has followed the basics of our Weight Loss Program, by dropping her carbohydrate addiction.

Maureen weightloss

Before

This picture was taken in Ireland 3 years ago . Note the size of my neck and arms.  I was at the doctor’s office yesterday and weighed in at 156 lb. In September of 2010, I was 195, so have lot almost 40 lbs. One of the other things I’ve been using is apple cider vinegar.  I think this revved up my metabolism.

Allergies:
To help a person who has allergy problems, one must play detective. There are several body systems which may need to be addressed to solve the riddle. Determining which one or ones are the priorities can help to find quicker resolution. Every person is an individual, and although there are some herbs which will help many people most of the time, there are more severe or stubborn cases, where some sleuthing can make a difference quicker and with longer lasting benefits.

The systems that we assess for allergies are digestive, eliminative, respiratory, urinary and hepatic or liver. Our marvellous liver performs over 500 functions, so for those who are challenged with allergies, the liver is certainly one of the organs to check out. Let’s look briefly at the other systems first, by learning some of the clues as to which system is trying to tell you something. Click here to read more

Muscle Testing:
Muscle Response Testing, or MRT, is based on the principle that there is an energy field which flows around and through all things. The Chinese call this energy CHI. Like a magnet creating a magnetic field, which holds iron filings in a certain pattern, the CHI creates a field which holds the cells of our body in alignment. In muscle response testing we are checking the strength or weakness of the body’s energy field. It is a method of measuring the body’s energy balance. Click here to read more

Weight Loss and HCG:
Response to question: I have done some research and have come up with several opinions which  feel the HCG component is a placebo affect. This makes sense as anytime a person cleans up their diet, and decreases their caloric and carbohydrate intake, they will lose weight! Click here to read more

PhytoTherapy and Hormones:
Many women using synthetic hormones stopped when the Nurse’s Initiative published the negative side effects. Now more women use natural treatments to help with hormonal challenges, ranging from acne to weight gain and hot flashes.

Phytotherapy is the use of plants, either from food or herbs, for healing purposes. Phytotherapy is a wonderful alternative for hormonal balance because it works with your body to give you what you need, and has a proven track record of safety and efficacy. Click here to read more

Political Scene

If some people actually think there have been deaths from vitamins… which of course is ridiculous because the very word means “Vital Minerals”, please direct them to this one article. It is an excellent backup for those of us who find ourselves struggling to convince people… the article clearly shows that there has not been ONE proven death from natural products in the last 27 YEARS.

Compare this to the annual deaths reported by government agencies on deaths from adverse effects of drugs – in the USit is now over 160,000 per year! (Canadawould be roughly 1/10 of that figure).

Spiritual and Emotional

It was Tagore who said, “I slept and dreamt that life was joy.  I awoke and saw that life was service.  I acted and behold, service was joy.”

To do the thing that is yours to do today, that’s service.  As we do the thing that is ours to do today, there is joy.  We can act from that joy and live in a state of joy.

It was Charles Fillmore, the founder of the Unity religion, who on his 90th birthday wrote this affirmation:  “I spring out of bed and fairly sizzle with zeal and enthusiasm and go forth this day to do the things that ought to be done by me.”
